Ed. Varie is pleased to present VALENCE IN EVERYDAY OBJECTS, a solo-exhibition of recent work by artist Anna Sörenson.
As a form of day-to-day notetaking Sörenson’s paintings remain close to her everyday life through the recording and investigation of environment and cultural context. Reflecting on theories and ideas revolving around consciousness and the unconscious, Sörenson treats a painting not only as an illusion, but as a real object in the world. As shapes present themselves in color and material, examination is the central point of her work. Her technique includes the use of collage and manipulation of paper, fabric, thread, found and other non-traditional painting materials. These recognizable objects connect her work with the real world, while deliberate and ethereal use of color and repetition bring the viewer full circle, back again into the illusion of a painting.
Sörenson’s work has traveled the globe in select group and solo-exhibitions in Berlin, New York, Stockholm, and Umeå, as well through her ongoing project “Suitcase Paintings”. In February of this year Sörenson exhibited collage works within a group show, Excavation: Artifact, at Ed. Varie. Sörenson’s has been awarded numerous scholarships including the International and Fine Art scholarship from Pratt Institute where she is a recent MFA graduate, and a FullBright Scholarship which led to a summer residency with Ed. Varie in 2012.
