Edifice, by Nancy Morrow, 2012
111 Front Street, Suite 228, 212 255 6651
October 4 - October 28, 2012
Reception: Thursday, October 4, 6 - 9 PM
Shift is an exhibition of original encaustic and mixed media paintings and works on paper that take a revisionist look at women in the workforce. Morrow, who has had a diverse number of jobs herself, creates a wry, stream of consciousness type survey that runs the gamut from traditionally male dominated trades and upper level corporate management positions, to scientific research, food services and more.
Pairing the conventional language of painting with collage and that of the comic strip, workers are shown coexisting in spaces with powerful, natural forces at play. Environments suggest various worksites but remain specifically non-locatable. The visual and cultural politics of representation are at the forefront of Morrow’s work, combing issues of scripted roles, personal power, fears and desire —both public and personal.
